We are currently knees deep in a writing project, and prior to beginning I wanted to review writing dialogue using quotation marks since it is not quite yet an automatic process for my son. In an attempt to make using quotation marks fun, I decided to find some funny photos that were relevant to my son’s life that he could write quotations for, and it turned out to be a total winner!
All I did was find some funny photos of him, his friends, family and even his pets, plug them into PowerPoint, and then add some quote boxes above the person to be speaking out loud. Then I printed it off and he created a quote for each after reviewing the rules. Took me minutes!
I did want to make sure he not only practiced writing the quote at the beginning of a sentence but also at the end, so when he came up with one I would have him first write it on a white board and then write it again with the quotation in the opposite position in the sentence.
For example, if he wrote:
“You win again,” Emme said.
I would also have him write it this way below it on the white board:
Emme said, “You win again.”
Then he would just choose which version he wanted to write on the paper and copy it.
If you are teaching in a classroom, just take some photos of your students prior of them being funny and they will LOVE IT, I promise you!
Anyway, I wanted to share because it was such a big hit and so easy to prepare. I think I am actually going to print out more and maybe extend it for another lesson to have more than one person speaking!
Happy Teaching!
