I wish Pinterest had been around when I first started teaching. I can’t tell you the oogles of ideas I have gotten from other amazing teachers just from browsing Pinterest. If you come into my classroom well-versed in Pinterest teacher pinning, then you’ll see many things that look familiar. I think teaching is all about sharing good practices, and there are tons of them out there floating in cyberland. Here are a few honorable mentions:
Put dry erase markers in a tube sock! Tube sock serves as an eraser and kids don’t get to be choosy about which color they get! (Yes, it becomes an issue.) G-g-g-genius! Thanks, Amy, over at Confessions of a Nerdy Teacher!
Be an expert visors! If there’s an expert in a concept we are learning, they get a visor and may wear it so others know they are good friends to go to for help. I have looked everywhere for the pin for this, but can’t find it.
I did this cute activity the first day of school for the students’ first homework assignment. I saw it over at Teaching My Friends, but it was originally from the class site of Mr. Auerfield. I thought it was a unique take on the whole getting to know you routine. Basically you make a poster about yourself, but everything written is based on numbers that relate to your life! I included things like how far Jupiter is from Earth since it’s my favorite planet, how many years I lived in Japan, and the height of the tallest roller coaster since they are one of my favorite things. The kids loved learning about me and telling others unique facts about themselves!
Finally, my very favorite teaching idea for the first week of school that I got off Pinterest. It’s from Teresa over at Confessions of a Teaching Junkie. Remember as a child how you thought your teacher lived at school and just waited for you to come back the next day? Well in My Teacher’s Secret Life by Stephen Krensky, a student wonders just that. We read the book as a class and their homework assignment was to write what they thought my secret life was. Oh my goodness, what fun it was reading their responses! And it served as an informal writing assessment to see where they were with their writing skills. Seriously, if these don’t make you smile, then there is something wrong with you!
Did you read that? “…because she always looks fit.” Yes, my studious pupil, you get an A. 🙂

Ariel I had no idea how you stayed so fit but now I can see that its from modeling on the side while being a rock star at night, shooting stars out of your hands and walking the President's dog.

ARIEL! First of all, thank you so much for featuring my Early Finisher Board on your blog. Secondly, IT IS ADORABLE!! I love how you used the polka dot folders. Is it okay with you if I post a picture of your board on my blog and FB page? If it is okay, I would love to add a picture to this Early Finisher Board FAQ page: Early Finisher Board FAQ's
