Today my 7 year old son presented his family traditions project at school. Thankfully his teacher is very flexible with my schedule and allowed him to do it during my planning period so I could watch! It was a project based on a holiday tradition that our family does. My son chose to make a diorama showing one of our favorite traditions on Christmas Eve: making and delivering cookies to policemen, firemen, military members and hospital staff that must work through the night. It’s a tradition that started in my family years ago and is now being passed on to the next generations! In fact here’s a throwback to 2004 at my parents’ house on Christmas Eve (my husband will kill me):
We find great joy in baking the cookies together as a family and even more when we see the lit up faces of those we deliver to! In the past we’ve even had firefighters let the kids up into the trucks and hang out for a bit! We find it’s a good lesson for the kids on empathy and giving to others.
