So I have made a vow to myself that I will be posting more of my teaching tidbits this year. I get so busy during the year that I tend to slack on this, but I love to share my ideas and things I have found that have worked wonderfully with my children and/or students.
This is a tad late, but I still wanted to share my newest FREEBIE over at my Teachers Pay Teachers store: the Celebrity Measurement Parade! Who doesn’t like free stuff?! Okay, onto the activity…
I love helping students make connections between concepts they learn and real life. It’s the whole reason teachers do what we do. The moment students begin to USE the concepts they’ve learned is thrilling! I thought I’d try this with my students with customary units of measurement. Although my kids could make connections with measurement within a foot, they had a harder time with multiple feet. So I decided we would put this to work by exploring the heights of various famous people!
Kids LOVE to love famous people. They love athletes, singers, actors, and even historical figures that we have learned about over the course of the year. So I had students research the height of their favorite celebrity and bring that information to school. I found head shots of those people and blew them up to be as close to life-size as possible. Then I printed them out and students measured out their heights on butcher paper. They got to design their famous person’s outfit and accessories as they drew them out in various poses. Then I tacked them up on the wall so students walking through could compare them! They LOVED doing this and most of them were very surprised at how much taller/shorter their celebrity was ‘in person’.
It was such a hit that I decided to create a product that included pictures, a homework sheet, grading rubric, direction posters, and step-by-step instructions on how to do implement this into your classroom. I made it free because I can’t include photos of famous people in my priced items for copyright reasons I’m nice. Wink!
Also, don’t forget about my other freebie for parents and teachers! I am very passionate about the Daily 5/CAFE (you can read more about that here and here), so I created these informative parent letters to give parents specific strategies to help their child read better. The letters are divided up by strands of reading: comprehension, accuracy, fluency, and expanding vocabulary. It’s been downloaded over 2,100 times on my TPT page, so what are you waiting for?!
